A Real Patient Story through Chiropractic Care
One of the things I enjoy most about being a chiropractor is that no two days are ever the same. One patient may come in with lower back pain after gardening, the next with headaches they've lived with for years, and another simply wanting to keep their body functioning well. Every person has a different story. And every now and then, a patient walks through the door with a story that reminds us just how connected the human body can be.
A real patient Experience
A few years ago, whilst working in Winchester, I met a gentleman in his mid-60s. He was fit, active and healthy. He walked his dogs every day, enjoyed swimming and generally looked after himself. His reason for consulting me was straightforward enough—he’d been struggling with neck pain, stiffness and headaches for around six weeks. More recently, he’d also experienced occasional tingling into one of his hand.
As we talked through his history, something else caught my attention.
Every few minutes during the consultation, he would have a persistent coughing fit before settling again. After watching this happen several times, I asked if he was feeling alright.
“I’m absolutely fine,” he replied. “I’ve just had this cough for about eight weeks.”
Naturally, I wanted to know more.
He explained that he’d already been thoroughly investigated. He’d completed two courses of antibiotics, undergone blood tests, chest imaging, ECGs and other medical investigations. Reassuringly, everything had come back clear, but no one had been able to explain why the cough persisted.
What interested me was the timing.
Although there was no way of knowing for certain whether the two issues were connected, his cough and neck symptoms had appeared around the same period. I explained that the nervous system plays a vital role in how different parts of the body communicate. Irritation around the neck can sometimes influence nerves that travel towards the arm, chest and diaphragm, and while I couldn’t promise this was the explanation, it seemed reasonable to include it in our thinking given that other serious causes had already been ruled out.
After discussing everything together, we began a course of chiropractic care aimed at improving the function of his spine and reducing irritation within the surrounding joints and nervous system. His first visit included a adjustment, some cranial work and pelvis stretch. .
Before he left, I told him we’d catch up at the end of the week.
When he returned later that week, he walked into the clinic smiling and immediately shook my hand.
“The movement is so much better already,” he said.
Then he added something I wasn’t expecting.
“And the cough… it’s virtually disappeared.”
He explained that after the appointment he’d coughed a little that evening, but by the following morning it had almost completely stopped. Over the following weeks, his cough didn’t return, his neck continued to improve and he was able to get back to swimming and enjoying his normal routine.
What this case does remind me, however, is that the body is wonderfully interconnected. Sometimes symptoms don’t fit neatly into a single box, and looking at the whole person—not just the area where symptoms are being experienced—can reveal possibilities that might otherwise be overlooked.
Stories like this are one of the reasons I love being a chiropractor. The human body has an incredible capacity to adapt and change, and it is a privilege to help patients improve their movement, restore spinal function and regain confidence in their bodies. While chiropractic care is not the right approach for everyone, supporting people on their health journey is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
If you know someone who has been struggling, who feels they’ve tried everything, or who simply wants to understand whether chiropractic care may be able to help them, we would be happy to have a conversation.
