Pelvic Pain and Hip Arthritis - What's the Connection?
Arthritis of the hip is a common condition, particularly as we age. It's caused by the cartilage in the hip joint wearing down, causing pain, stiffness and reduced mobility.
Whilst the pain is usually felt in the hip, many also experience discomfort in the pelvic area.
Why is that?
The pelvis and hips are connected through muscles, ligaments and tendons. When arthritis develops the pain can radiate into the pelvis. As the hip joint becomes stiff or painful, sufferers can change their gait, or the way they sleep or move, to avoid discomfort. This altered movement places extra stress on the pelvis, leading to muscle tension, strain and pelvic dysfunction.
The pelvis acts as the body's foundation supporting the spine and playing a key part in regular movements such as migrating from sitting to standing, or climbing stairs. When arthritis causes loss of function in the hip joint the pelvis, and surrounding muscles, compensate for the reduced mobility. This can lead to pelvic instability, creating imbalances and putting excess strain on the pelvic muscles and ligaments. Over time this can lead to pain, or even injury to the pelvis.
How we can help
Chiropractic treatment can help to ease the discomfort of hip arthritis and pelvic pain. Through realignment of the spine and pelvis we can help to restore proper joint movement, reducing pressure and improving mobility.
Regular treatment can also improve pelvic stability by correcting misalignments and promoting better posture. This will not change the hip arthritis but can improve function and discomfort.
We can work with you to develop a personal plan to strengthen muscles around the hip and pelvis - further reducing strain and reducing long term pain and dysfunction.
