Maintenance Care - Keeping You Feeling Your Best

Last week in clinic I found myself jotting down some of the lovely things people say as they leave:

  •  “You’re the angel in my world.”

  • “I feel like Baloo… like I’ve had a really good scratch of an itch I didn’t know I had.”

  • “I walk out feeling like Mr Soft — everything nice and loose again.”

Compliments are always appreciated, of course. But it also made me think: although these patients come in with different histories and different bodies, they all have one thing in common.

They don’t just book in when something is “wrong”. They come in occasionally for maintenance care to help them stay well.

What is maintenance care?

Maintenance care is a regular check-in with your chiropractor when you’re not necessarily in pain. The aim is to keep your spine and nervous system functioning well, reduce the build-up of stiffness, and help prevent smaller issues turning into bigger ones.

Think of it as a sensible “tune-up” — like servicing your car or going to the dentist for a check-up. You’re not waiting for something to break before you look after it.

Why it can make a difference

Your spine protects the spinal cord and supports the nervous system — the system that helps coordinate everything from movement and balance to how your body copes with stress. When joints are stiff, muscles are overworking, or movement patterns become restricted, it can start to show up in all sorts of ways.

Sometimes you’ll notice it quickly. More often, it creeps in over time — especially with:

  • Desk work and long periods of sitting

  • Repetitive jobs

  • Poor posture habits

  • Busy periods where exercise slips

  • Physical work, training, lifting, running, or being “on your feet all day”

And here’s the key point: stiffness and poor mobility increase the likelihood of sprains and strains. Whether you’re sedentary or very active, your body tends to cope better when it’s moving well.

Is maintenance care for everyone?

Not always — and we’ll be straight with you about that.

Maintenance care is usually less useful when the problem is acute and uncomplicated, and you recover fully with a short course of treatment.

And many people do brilliantly by keeping up with the right lifestyle changes — Pilates, yoga, strength work, walking, better desk set-up, smarter pacing — and need little or no ongoing support.

For others, especially if you’re prone to recurring flare-ups, have a physically demanding job, or know your body tightens up under stress, maintenance care can be a simple way to stay on track.
